Every day more than 3 million people create, simulate, and animate with Autodesk® 3ds Max® software. Whether you're an artist looking to communicate your vision more effectively, an architect on a tight deadline, or a game developer looking to get your product out the door-3ds Max is ready to work for you. And best of all? It's completely free! Today we'll be exploring the installation of Autodesk® 3ds Max® 2016. We'll install any required plug-ins and update our system before finally downloading the installation file from Autodesk’s website. Let's get started, shall we? Note: The steps listed here were performed on a Windows 8.1 machine. If you used a different operating system (OS), the steps should be similar to these. First, let's run the program's first-time user process. I recommend first creating a new folder on your desktop, saving it to your C:\\ drive (and naming it "3ds Max 2016"), and then browsing to that folder and selecting all of its contents before clicking next. This will make it easy if you decide to later uninstall 3ds Max 2016; all of its files are located within this one self-contained folder. After the program has been installed, you're ready to begin. To begin, open a Command Prompt window in Windows and type in "C:\\Program Files\\Autodesk\\3ds Max 2016\\Bin\\MaxCmd" (without the quotes), followed by your admin username and password. If you forgot your username or password, you'll be prompted to enter them manually. If this is a new installation of 3ds Max 2016, you'll be asked to select a command to run after installation has completed—choose Install 3ds Max 2016 from the list. Next, click on your desktop and locate your newly-created "3ds Max 2016" folder. Double-clicking on the MaxCmd. exe file will launch the Command Prompt; we'll be using this Command Prompt to download and install our plug-ins. To begin, type "C:\\Program Files\\Autodesk\\3ds Max 2016\\Bin\\MaxCmd.exe" (without the quotes), followed by your admin username and password. Again, if you forgot your username or password, you'll be prompted to enter them manually. Next, type in "P:Update~1", (without the quotes) followed by your admin username and password. This will prompt you to select the Plug-ins that you would like to install. Click the checkboxes next to any or all of your desired plug-ins. Once all of them are selected, click the “Install” button at the bottom of the window. If you receive an error stating that one or more plug-in(s) failed to install, repeat Step 3 until all of your chosen plug-ins have been successfully installed. Click Finish when finished. Your "Update" folder should now contain three new subfolders: "Install", "Install 2", and "Install 3". eccc085e13
